Finding His Voice: Charly's Story

At just six years old, most children are busy learning to ride bikes or building snowmen. But for Charly, life looked very different.

After 2½ years of cancer treatments, hospital rooms had replaced playgrounds, and fear had replaced laughter

As the long months wore on, Charly’s world became smaller. He grew quiet, frustrated, and withdrawn, resisting the very treatments meant to help him heal. His parents were heartbroken — they just wanted to see their little boy smile again.

That’s when they found Mind & Spirit Counseling Center’s C.O.O.L. (Children Overcoming the Obstacles of Life) program.

Through play therapy, Charly discovered something powerful: a safe, creative way to share feelings that were too big for words. Using art, sand trays, and toys, he began to express his fears, anger, and sadness — and little by little, he found his voice again.

“Playing here helps my heart feel happy again.” — Charly, age 6

This wasn’t about changing his diagnosis.
It was about giving him back his childhood.
