Clinical Social Worker

I am a clinical social worker who specializes in life transitions, grief, loss, aging, divorce, depression and anxiety. My treatment approaches include cognitive behavioral, mindfulness and client-centered therapy. My goal is to help each client identify their own strengths, practice self-compassion and clarify their own goals and hopes.
I received my Masters degree in 1988. From there I practiced at a community mental health center working with abused children involved in the court system. Then I worked in a Workers' Compensation system counseling clients who had been injured on the job, helping them cope with the loss and fallout of their physical injury. My path next took me to Lutheran Services in Iowa where I supervised in-home family services and the outpatient counseling program. Along the way I started to work with hospice patients and families and have continued to do that for the last 17 years combining that experience with my clinical work here at the Center.
I often think of a quote I read, "God made people because God loved stories." I, too, feel the sacred privilege of hearing the life stories of the clients I meet. Each person is doing the best they can with the circumstances of their lives. Sometimes my job is to point out that they are the heroes in their own stories and listen to help them make choices during the difficult times in their lives.
